A conversation with make-up artist/nail artist Amy Gonyea

07.06.11

What’s better than having a fabulous pedicure by my dear friend and make-up artist, Amy Gonyea? Having a couple of glasses of wine and listening to her dish about what is HOT right now with make-up and fashion……read on….

Leah: What do you think of all the bright make-up I’ve been seeing everywhere…magazines, runways, celebrities?

Amy: Bold, bright make-up is SO in right now….we’re not seeing that “mod” vibe that we have seen in the past. It’s more of a “boho” vibe. Think Woodstock meets modern day. Bright yellows, pinks, orange. You name it. The bolder the better. I saw that Marc Jacobs and Christian Dior were showcasing bright, orange hues on all of their models for their runway shows…..so I decided to play a little on my own with this bold color. Actually, the make-up line that we carry at the salon, Becca, has a great blush-color, Songbird, that is an orange-y hue that I have been putting on my clients eyelids.  It brings out green eyes, blue eyes, pretty much any eye color. It’s so refreshing and bright. I’m all about using blush for eye-shadow….and it’s easier to work with too, so you can build for more impact or just dab a little for a sheer wash of color.

Leah: What about the lips? I love gloss….so how do I go a little brighter with my gloss without looking too clownish?

Amy: There’s nothing clownish about bright colors when you apply them right.  Cherry red lips and bubble-gum pinks aren’t for teenagers either….and it’s such a nice way to brighten your complexion without going over the top. It CAN be done. Becca lip-glosses are SO sheer…it takes the fear out of playing with color because they are SO subtle.  Oh….and may I add…matching toes, finger-nails and lips are a great way to bring a little bit of high-fashion to your everyday wardrobe. It’s fun and flirty. If your nails are cherry red…..play a little with the Becca lipgloss, Marachino…..it gives you that “bitten/stained” look…a hint of Marachino cherry….they’re not just for your cocktails anymore!

Leah: I love it! Makes me want to have a cocktail on a tropical island and rock all of these colors!

Amy: You don’t need a tropical island….you can wear all of these colors right here in Providence.  It only takes a minute to incorporate all of these trends into your routine. You won’t look clownish, or look like you are a reject from Rupaul’s Drag Race….you have to play a little in order to see what colors work…but I guarantee, everyone can wear the bright hues….I say, you have to live a little. If you don’t try new things, you’ll never know what’s out there.
